Founded in 2013 by married couple Sophie Parker-Thomas MW and winemaker Matt Thomson, Blank Canvas is a winery located in the Marlborough wine region of New Zealand's South Island. The company partners with local producers in Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago to produce a selection of single vineyard wines (including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Syrah) that express the multitude of terroirs and microclimates of the various vineyards. The Chardonnay grapes come from the Reed vineyard, which has been planted since 2000 in the Marlborough wine region. This wine, considered one of the best New Zealand Chardonnays, shows great elegance and gastronomic versatility. The color is intense and the scents are captivating. On the nose, the flavor profile is powerful and reveals stone fruit and sweet citrus aromas with a delicate spiciness. Aging in oak barrels adds tertiary notes of spice and a smoky woody undertone. In the mouth, this Chardonnay is full, complex, round, and balanced. The flavor is a perfect combination of stone fruit, grapefruit, baked apple, and spice paired with French oak. The acidity is lively and the finish is long and pleasant. It goes beautifully with chicken and turkey meat dishes served with creamy sauces, or pasta carbonara.
