The renowned Australian winery Thistledown has been producing wines from different sub-regions of South Australia since 2010, selecting grapes from the best growers. The company, owned by Fergal Tynan and Giles Cooke, both MW, focuses its production on the Grenache and Syrah vines, giving particular attention to the maximum expression of the terroir and sustainable viticulture practices. The Grenache grapes come from a vineyard with dry-grown old bush-trained vines located at the Seaview end of Chapel Hill Rd. Here the vines sink into red-brown sandy soils with quartz and ironstone and are grown under a low-intervention regime and minimal spraying. The harvest is manual and takes place in the early hours of the morning. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The finished wine is then left to mature for 8 months in used 300 and 500-liter French oak barrels. She's Electric is an extraordinary Grenache with a complex flavor profile. It smells of raspberry, wild strawberry and orange peel, red cherry and Mediterranean herbs, pink pepper, and dried berries. On the palate, it is velvety and extremely elegant, vibrant and juicy. It has a good texture and fine tannins. The finish is long and recalls notes of dried berries and spices. Best paired with roast duck served with red fruit sauces.
