Enjoy it now, or cellar for a few more years. No need to decant before serving. This is a powerful white wine, with a surprisingly subtle nose of white-fleshed fruits, white flowers, and citrus zest. It is the result of a happy accident – Carignan vines naturally mutated into their white counterparts on-site, and this wine is made exclusively from those rogue Carignan Blanc grapes. The site is Finca les Planetes, located in the underrated region of Priorat, Catalonia, which has seen a significant rise in recent years. In keeping with tradition, winemakers Carles Ortiz and Esther Nin choose to harvest their grapes by hand, and their wines are biodynamic and organic certified. The vines in this 5-hectare site grow at 350-450 metres above sea level, on schist soils, which impart a steely minerality to this white. In the mouth, it shows strength and grace, with fresh, striking acidity. You can find notes of citrus fruit and acacia, alongside a fleshy undercurrent of pear and apple. The finish is long and mineral focused. Made with natural yeasts, the wine ages for 7 months in French oak barrels before bottling. It is perfect for pairing with delicate fish dishes, summery salads, or soft cheese.
