Meerlust Chardonnay 2023

Enjoy it now or cellar for a few years. No need to decant before serving. The tradition of winemaking in Meerlust is as deeply ingrained as the soil beneath its vines. Eight generations of Myburghs have owned the Stellenbosch estate, each passing down a standard of excellence that can be tasted in today’s wines, produced by Hannes Myburgh. Meerlust estate is situated at one of the most southerly points of Africa, on a granite outcrop pointing towards False Bay. Its soils exhibit a top layer of granite gravel, sitting atop an ancient clay deposit. Chardonnay has been produced here since 1995 and is primarily planted along the banks of the Eerste river, where soils range from decomposed granite to weathered shale. It has an intoxicating and complex bouquet - peach, pear and apricot fruits are complemented by notes of almonds and lemon peel. In the glass, it is a beautiful pale yellow colour, with a greenish hue. This Chardonnay has been sourced from 6 different blocks of vineyard, allowing it to fully express both its sweet fruitiness and citrus acidity. Stone fruits are dominant on the tongue, supported by a crisp acidity, which continues into the long, pleasurable finish. Pairs well with grilled fish, white and red meats, or creamy dishes.
