Matua Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Cellar for up to 4 years. Serve chilled. The name “Matua” means “head of the family” in New Zealand’s native Maori language, which is appropriate given that the winery made the country’s first Sauvignon Blanc back in 1974. The winery was originally founded in a modest tin shed by two brothers, Bill and Ross Spence, who had a vision to make New Zealand wine that could compete on the global wine scene. They’re now recognised as one of the country’s premier producer, with a wide range of award-winning wines. This stunning 100% Sauvignon Blanc is reminiscent of the brothers’ very first bottle which helped kickstart New Zealand’s Sauvignon revolution. The fruit comes from prime vineyard sites in Marlborough which is known for its cool climate and ideal growing conditions for the variety. Zingy passionfruit, gooseberries, and fresh herbal notes dominate on the nose, while the first sip reveals a bright citrus fruit core with a mouthwatering freshness. The finish is pure and clean, making it a great wine to serve as an aperitif or to cleanse the palate alongside creamy cheeses, roast chicken, or hearty pasta dishes. It’s also a natural match for anything from the sea, including fresh oysters, grilled fish, and shrimp.
