Drink now or cellar for up to 25 years. Decant for 1 hour or more before serving. The rugged mountainous region of Priorat was largely neglected until the 1980s when a group of young winemakers arrived and set out to restore it to its former glory. One of those pioneers was José Luís Pérez who recently handed over the reins of Mas Martinet to his daughter Sara Pérez who has proven herself to be just as much of a groundbreaking winemaker as her dad. Els Escurcons is Sara’s unique creation, sourced from Garnacha Tinta vines planted at 600 metres of altitude on barren licorella or slate soils. Conditions here are harsh even for grapes, with minimal rainfall and blazing hot summers. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand and fermented in wooden vats and cement tanks using wild yeasts. The final step is ageing in a mixture of amphorae and 60-litre demijohns according to the vintage. Priorat is known for its powerful, firm reds that need time to open up, but this is a softer, more elegant style that can easily be enjoyed young. Dense cherry and plum notes dominate on the nose, with hints of rosemary, thyme, and baked earth lingering on the palate. Sprightly acidity, smooth tannins, and a medium body make this an excellent gastronomic wine especially when paired with tomato-based dishes, roast lamb, or cured meats.
