Cellar for up to 15 years. Decant for up to 2 hours before serving. Priorat is one of the great Spanish red wines, and the vineyard of Clos Martinet produces one of the best examples of Priorat. It opens up with a bouquet of red hedgerow fruits, coupled with a deep, slatey minerality, typical of the region, dried herbs, and warm baking spice. It is crafted from 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Carignan, with smaller drops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Mas Martinet was founded in 1986 by José Luís Pérez, who had an influential role in the revival of this historic wine region. The winery has since passed down to his daughter, Sara Pérez, an accomplished oenologist. The core parcel of Mas Martinet’s estate is the 7-hectare Clos Martinet, located between Falset and Gratallops, a sloping landscape with a rich bedrock of slate. On the palate, the Clos Martinet is complex and well-structured – it is a mature wine, with fine, velvety tannins, helped along by 17 months of ageing in Austrian oak. It is deeply mineral, with rich notes of blackberry, cranberry, plum, and dried Provençal herbs. Consider pairing it with some Catalan fuet, barbecued meat, or a tomato-rich pasta sauce.
