Dugat-Py is one of the top Gevrey-Chambertin domaines thanks to the talent and passion of the Dugat family who only began bottling their wines on site in 1989. The family have been making wine in Gevrey since at least 1645 and the current generation, represented by Bernard Dugat, has cemented the domaine’s reputation for intense yet stylish wines crafted from old vines with an average age of 70 years. In 2003 the domaine was converted to organic agriculture and the family insist on using horses to work the vineyards wherever possible. This helps to keep their 13 hectares of vines in top condition without damaging the natural ecosystem. The focus here is on quality above all else, and their annual production is so tiny that they frequently sell out. The family’s Coeur de Roy is a masterful benchmark expression of Gevrey-Chambertin with an abundance of dark fruit and a muscular structure that will respond gracefully to extended cellaring. Fruit is sourced from 50-100 year old vines which give tiny yields and incredibly concentrated flavors and aromas and 70-80% is whole bunch fermented to add character and strength to the finished wine. The cuvee is then matured in 70% new oak barrels for 16-18 months to polish and harmonise the young wine before bottling. This is a truly magnificent Burgundy for special celebratory dinners and a handsome addition to any collector’s cellar.
