La Vallana is a renowned Piedmontese winery located in the province of Novara, famous for its excellent production of Nebbiolo wines from Alto Piemonte. The Nebbiolo grapes, here called by its local name Spanna, are selected and harvested from the production area of the recent DOC Colline Novaresi, located in Alto Piemonte. Vinification takes place in concrete vats and the wine is then left to mature for about 2 years before being put on the market. Spanna is one of the most representative wines of the company; a Nebbiolo full of personality with a unique and interesting character that is quite different from those of the Langhe. The wine has a bright ruby color and a broad and intense aromatic profile with notes of red fruits, spices, and flowers (especially rose and violet), hints of undergrowth, and tobacco. On the palate, it reveals a good structure, an elegantly fruity character, and a medium body. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated. The finish is long and fruity. It is a very approachable wine, ready to drink now but can remain in the cellar for a few years. Try it with fettuccine with porcini mushrooms, or with a mixed board of cured meats and mature cheeses.
