The tribe of the Nipses inhabited the region. Homer wrote about them in his “Odyssey” describing them as they defended Troy. It is the excavation site of the Roman town Heliopolis – the Town of the Sun. In the 16th century the town was even named Gyozeken, which means “beautiful view”.
