Svolvær is an artist’s paradise, known for its vibrant summers. On this walking tour through the heart of this small town in Norway’s Lofoten archipelago, you’ll find out that its history is just as magnificent as its scenery! The tour starts on the main square, between Torget street and the harbor, where you’ll take a leisurely stroll through the city center. You’ll cross the bridge to the historical Svinøya island where you’ll have captivating views of Svolvær. I’ll tell you some exciting stories that have shaped the town, including the tale of the 1941 Lofoten Raid, when British and Norwegian soldiers carried out a daring and heroic attack on German forces occupying the area. Svolvær has long been a place of inspiration for artists, and no one has captured the dramatic Lofoten light better than local painter Gunnar Berg. Its art scene is still very much alive, and I’ll show you several galleries and sculptures scattered around its streets. Before the tour ends in front of the Fiskerkona monument, you’ll see Jeppe Hein’s ‘Eye of the North,’ a fascinating monument that symbolizes both the power of nature and human endurance. On this 45-minute tour, you can look forward to: • Seeing Kjeøya kystbatteri (Kjeøya Coastal Battery), an old German military facility dating back to World War II • Taking in Svolvær Church which was built by the residents themselves, stone by stone • Strolling past the Lofoten War Memorial Museum, home to one of the world’s largest collections of uniforms and smaller artifacts from the Second World War • Looking around one of the places in town where Gunnar Berg drew inspiration for his iconic depictions of tough fishermen and stormy seas • Glimpsing the iconic Fiskehjeller, where Lofoten’s “gold” (codfish) is left to dry • Finding out about Norway’s biggest fishing boom where thousands of fishermen would descend on Svolvær every winter to participate in the legendary Lofoten fishing season Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local looking to learn more, I promise a tour full of memorable moments. You’ll enjoy the views, take pictures, and maybe even be tempted to taste some local delicacies along the way. So, come along on this unforgettable journey through the history, culture, and soul of Svolvær – I can’t wait to show you the city!
