Scandic Strand Hotel is quite a historical hotel. The building itself and the surrounding area, in which the hotel is located, were built in the late 1920’s. Originally, the building housed two separate hotels named “Fønix Hotel” and “City Hotel”. Olaf Jørgen Strand bought the two hotels in 1969, and united them to the hotel that today is the Strand. In 2000 “Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibselskab asa” OVDS bought the Strand Hotel. OVDS also owns 6 of the 11 “Hurtigruten” ships, and is a major participant in the Norwegian transport and tourism industry.
