Rozafa Castle stands proudly atop a rocky hill where two rivers meet. It guards the city of Shkodër and bears witness to over 2,500 years of tumultuous Balkan history. On this walking tour, you’ll explore its imposing fortress walls and take in the dramatic stories and spectacular views that make this one of Albania’s most significant historical sites. The tour starts at the ticket station. You’ll walk uphill through a series of defensive gates and walls, each designed to repel attackers during the castle’s many sieges. I’ll take you on a chronological journey through the castle’s evolution from Illyrian stronghold to Venetian fortress, and reveal how each civilization left its mark on these ancient stones. Inside the fortress, you’ll explore three distinct yards with their remarkable structures. There are cisterns that sustained defenders during months-long sieges, the ruins of St. Stephen’s Cathedral (later converted to a mosque), medieval towers, and panoramic viewpoints offering breathtaking vistas of Shkodër, Lake Shkodër, and the Albanian Alps. The tour ends at the castle’s main gate, leaving you with a rich understanding of Albania’s complex past and its struggle for independence. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to: • Hear the haunting legend of Rozafa, the young woman sacrificed to ensure the castle walls would stand, who asked only that her right breast remain exposed to feed her infant son • Examine the fascinating 4th century BC “cyclopean stones“ from the original Illyrian walls, and spot cannonball damage from Ottoman sieges • Discover the castle’s strategic importance at the meeting point of the Drin, Kiri, and Buna rivers • Learn how Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg defied the Ottoman Empire for 25 years, winning over 33 battles against overwhelming odds • Understand how religion shaped the region as you see architectural evidence of pagan temples, Christian churches, and Islamic mosques within the castle walls • Gain insight into the brutal 1479 siege when Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror bombarded the castle for months • Take in spectacular panoramic views of the Albanian Alps, Lake Shkodër (the largest in the Balkans), and the three rivers that protected and nourished the ancient city On this 60-minute journey through Albania’s turbulent past, you’ll have an intimate experience of where legend and history intertwine among the weathered stones of Rozafa Castle. Please note: The tour does not include entrance to the castle grounds.
