Drink it now or cellar for a few years. No need to decant before serving. From just outside the city of Telavi in the historic Kakheti region, Marani have provided the world with mouth-watering Georgian wines for over a century. Founded in 1915, Marani have struck a perfect balance between the innovations of modern-day technology and a respect for traditional Kakheti techniques. They keep a small amount of space for international grape varieties, but the vast majority of Marani’s vineyards are dedicated to native Georgian vines, such as Tsolikauri. It is a delicious fruit, grown primarily in the Imereti region, and mainly used for making dry wine. However, the Tsolikauri grown in the Tvishi-specific viticultural area produces something remarkably sweet and succulent. Fruity notes of apricot, peach, ripe quince and honeysuckle come wafting out of this beautifully coloured wine. The taste is semi-sweet, due to the specific terroir of the Tvishi micro-zone: fruits are grown in a humid climate, in humus-carbonate soils. It is a crisp and elegant wine, the sweetness being balanced by a zestiness, chiming notes of pear mingle with a pineapple taste on the palate. It goes superbly with food and would work well as an aperitif. Consider serving it with fresh fruit, cheese, and nuts, or enjoy it with some traditional Georgian food.
