Drink now or cellar for up to 5 years. Serve chilled. Regarded as one of South Africa’s up-and-coming cool climate producers, Lismore sits right next to the Riviersonderend Mountain Range with vineyards planted on slopes in the foothills. Conditions here are ideal for premium white winemaking thanks to the very long ripening season with the fruit typically harvested 3-4 weeks after most other South African wine regions. This elegant barrel-aged Viognier makes the most of this aromatic variety using fruit grown on rose quartz soils that is picked at optimal ripeness and slowly pressed. Fermentation occurs in neutral Burgundian barrels and a 1500 litre concrete egg followed by a maturation period of 10 months. Combining these two techniques retains plenty of natural character and freshness from the fruit while also adding extra body and texture. In the glass you’ll immediately notice the attractive golden hue and enticing hints of peaches, apricots, and almond blossom, along with deeper undertones of vanilla and fresh pastry dough. On the palate there’s a rich, creamy texture balanced by a streak of acidity and a long finish with lingering notes of lusciously ripe stone fruit and subtle hints of spice. A great white to keep in the cellar for a few years or enjoy now alongside roast chicken, rich risottos, or mature cheeses.
