At the original Porta Principalis into Roman Eboracum stands an old Inn- grafted into the main stone gateway of the ancient city of York. Here is the Lamb and Lion a few steps away from York Minster on High Petergate- right in the heart of this medieval city. In all England there are few taverns blessed with such a position. Fire ravaged the Inn when the Earl of Manchester s men bombarded York in 1644 and over a hundred years later the Lamb was rebuilt by a wealthy butter merchant in 1756. Today- the Inn is one of the finest in our medieval city. With dark corridors- staircases and little snugs everywhere- the Lamb and Lion breathes the atmosphere of a time gone by. Up the steep staircases of this Georgian property you will find twelve beautifully decorated rooms- some overlooking the garden and the city walls- others down on to the hustle and bustle of High Petergate. At the top of the Inn is the Attic- a lovely hideaway where you can almost touch the medieval stone walls of the ancient fortifications. Refreshingly simple home cooked fayre is on the menu at the Lamb and Lion Inn. Home cooked dishes of good food and an ever changing selection of Real Ales and premium continental lagers- together with a good wine and Champagne list are on offer- making the Lamb and Lion an uncomplicated and relaxing place to enjoy. Our beer garden bar and BBQ runs throughout the year and we are well known for our delicious retro Basket Meals and Soup Kitchen
