Drink it now. No need to decant. Born in Epanomi to a family of farmers and winemakers, after years of study and work in one of the historic wineries of Greece, Vangelis Gerovassiliou took over the family farm. The first vinification took place in 1986 at the modern cellar built in the vineyard. His latest venture is Escapades Wines. From 2004 to 2016, together with Vassilis Tsaktsarlis, and wine importer Takis Soldatos, Gerovassiliou created a small winery, in Stellenbosch in South Africa, producing both indigenous and international varieties that have gained international acclaim. The grapes of Xinomavro, a charismatic but demanding variety originally from Macedonia, are vinified after a phase of cold contact with the skins. After fermentation, the wine then remains in contact with the lees for a few months, acquiring body and structure. It displays a soft salmon pink color and intoxicates the nose with aromas of citrus fruits (including pink grapefruit), berries, cherries, and gooseberries. A herbaceous and mineral base and delicate peppery notes complete the olfactory profile. On the palate, it is lively and medium-bodied. The acidity is remarkable and perfectly balances the variety of fruity aromas typical of Xinomavro. The finish is aromatic and reminiscent of black cherries. Try it with Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. Excellent with lobster pasta and tomato fish soup.
