J. Lohr South Ridge Syrah 2019

Cellar for 10 years or more. Decant for up to an hour before serving. The South Ridge Syrah is a classic Northern Rhône style blend, born and bred in the sunny terraces of Paso Robles, California. Rich scents of blueberries and strong Earl Grey tea are supported by hints of white and pink flowers. The fruity Syrah grapes are elevated by splashes of Grenache, Viognier and Mourvèdre. The J. Lohr winery’s story began in the 1960s when the eponymous South Dakota native Jerry Lohr began his search for an untapped Californian terroir. The winery’s ground zero is Monterey County, but Jerry quickly recognised the potential of Paso Robles - particularly for growing French varietals. Since Jerry began planting vines there in 1986, the region has grown enormously in popularity, and this Syrah blend does an excellent job of explaining why. It begins with a wave of red and black fruits. Tart cherry, wild raspberry, and blackberry mingle with savoury undertones of fennel, leather, tobacco and wet earth. There are also hints of varietal spice to be found and an excellent structure that will allow this wine to age for some time in a cellar. It’s a unique combination of Northern Rhǒne and Northern California. Perfect for pairing with braised beef, barbecue, or matured, smoky cheeses
