Eén op de zestien Nederlanders stamt af van een bewoner van de Koloniën van Weldadigheid. In dit grootschalige, maatschappelijke experiment werden aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw landlopers, bedelaars en ook weeskinderen uit het hele land gedwongen gehuisvest en tewerkgesteld. Nederlanders die in armoede leefden en een nieuwe kans zochten, mochten uit vrije wil meedoen aan dit experiment in de Koloniën. Dat laatste gebeurde in Wilhelminaoord en Frederiksoord in Drenthe. Hoe voelden de bewoners zich? Loop rond waar zij leefden en werkten, luister ter plaatse naar hun verhalen uit het leven gegrepen.
