Unveiled in 1961 in front of a crowd that included Judy Garland and Noël Coward, then called The Summit – Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel was the talk of the town for its ideal midtown location and mid-century modern look. Designed by famed architect Morris Lapidus, the building’s curving façade coated in sea foam-colored brick was an extreme contrast to the somber hues and straight lines of the surrounding skyscrapers. During the next two decades, the bright colors were traded in for muted tones and the name was changed to Loews New York Hotel. But one thing remained the same: The hotel’s popularity with people seeking a prime Manhattan location as a base for their city travels. Today, the original mid century modernist glory of the hotel has been restored.
