Centre Cane is a round cane made from the inside of the Rattan Palm. It is imported from Hong Kong, China and Indonesia. Used for basketry work. Centre cane is very brittle when dry but extremely strong when damp. Therefore centre cane should not be used dry. Soak the cane for about five minutes or even just dip it in water, then wrap it in a damp cloth and leave it at least fifteen minutes before using. If it becomes dry in working, damp it with a wet cloth. This is a natural material, therefore the weight may vary due to moisture loss. Lengths of cane will vary between 2 and 3 mts. Rattan grows up to several hundred mts long in the jungles of South East Asia, it is chopped to handy lengths of about 2 to 3mts for ease of carrying.
