Bussaco Palace

This legendary Palace, built for the last Kings of Portugal in 1885, was converted into a deluxe hotel in 1917 providing the very best of Portuguese hospitality. Today, its fine tradition for luxury and service continue under the care and management of Portugal’s best known hotel family. The hotel still retains many of the original and remarkable antique furnishings, vaulted arches, marble staircases, rare tapestries, fine masterpaintings and objets d’art by the most notable Portuguese artists. The hotel also boasts some of the country’s most important collection of “azulejos” of the 19th century depicting scenes from Portugal’s colourful maritime history, as well as the Battle of Bussaco, in 1810, which heralded the Duke of Wellington’s defeat of Napoleon’s army, leading to a successful marriage with its sumptuous surroundings. Amongst the most beautiful and historical hotels of the world, the Bussaco Palace Hotel has all the features of the dreamer’s “romantic palace” - set in an enchanted forest, high on a hill, and resplendent in its decorative Manueline-Gothic architecture. The majestic Restaurant “João Vaz”, once the Royal family’s banquet hall and now a top gourmet restaurant, offers classic international and Portuguese cuisine and has a must on its exclusive world-class Bussaco wines mis en bouteille au château. In all, a remarkable experience not to be missed in Portugal! Also unforgettable is the outdoor terrace overlooking the French garden and the overwhelming slope with its giant trees. It is located between Lisbon and Oporto, amidst the “Bussaco National Park”, a spectacular and serene landscape of 105 hectares virgin centuries-old walled forest, planted by the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites in the 17th Century, and renowned by arborists worldwide. This famous botanical treasure of Europe includes many specimen of rare flora and exotic plants of exquisite beauty collected all over the world by the Portuguese navigators. Its inspiring walking paths through the nature visiting fantastic fountains, chapels, belvederes, the Way of the Cross and the 17th century Monastery still exemplify the rarefied atmosphere of calm and seclusion of this very special place.
