Aalborg has always played a pivotal role in the Kingdom of Denmark. On this walking tour from the Utzon Center to the Aalborghus Castle, I’ll point out the tell-tale signs of the city’s transformation from a trading hub, to the centre of a civil war known as Count’s Feud in the 1500s, into a green and culturally rich city. Along with impressive medieval and modern architecture, I’ll show you the marketplace where Vikings used to trade when they first settled here, and the Budolfi Kirke which was built on the foundations of a wooden church from the Middle Ages. You'll hear about the most expensive building in Jutland, the Musikkens Hus (the House of Music) and Vesterbro, one of the most historically important streets in the city. Other highlights on this tour include: • Learning about the origin of funkis, the quintessential Danish design style • Discovering how Nordkraft, a disused power plant, was transformed into a cultural hub • Hearing the story behind the two kings who lost their claim to the Norwegian throne in battle, and are buried in the city’s first stone church, Vor Frue Kirke (Church of Our Lady) • Taking a walk down Skipper Clement Street, named after a rebel leader who is still admired around here • Finding the coziest wine bar in the city By the end of the tour, you’ll understand the city’s most significant history from the Viking age through the ages, and will have an appreciation of the transformation that Aalborg has undergone, into an attractive modern city for locals and visitors alike. Give yourself at least an hour to get the most out of this tour as there is much to see, with plenty of stops along the way and endless photo opportunities. Let’s get going!
